March begins with only Mercury retrograde. Note: All the dates below are for Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time.
- March 4: Mercury retrogrades into Aquarius
- March 5: Venus to Taurus
- March 10: Mercury direct
- March 10: Full Moon in Virgo
- March 16: Mercury to Pisces
- March 20: Sun to Aries / Autumn Equinox in Southern Hemisphere
- March 22: Saturn to Aquarius
- March 24: New Moon in Aries
- March 31: Mars to Aquarius
The transit of Mars through the final degrees of Capricorn will see it conjunct Jupiter, Pluto and Saturn
…suggesting that this could be a volatile time, especially as Jupiter closes in on an exact conjunction with Pluto and the next three full moons are all super moons [explained below]. The dates for these transits are close to:
- Mars conjunct Jupiter - March 20
- Mars conjunct Pluto - March 23
- Mars conjunct Saturn - March 31
- Jupiter conjunct Pluto - April 5.
Mars is said to act as a trigger or catalyst for major aspect patterns – such as the stellium of Jupiter, Pluto and Saturn - so it suggests that there could be significant events at this time.
How could this play out? We could see an escalation of current events unleashed through the Saturn Pluto conjunction which seem to be playing out through the corona virus and all the Pluto Saturn type events it has unleashed including an increasing fear that leads to greater restrictions and controls that may be both voluntary and involuntary. There is a danger that shadowy energies may use these conditions to further their own aims as fear can be used to manipulate others and often leads people to seek a scapegoat to blame.
The economic aspects of this pattern may also start to hit home during this time, especially as we remember that 12 years ago when Jupiter and Pluto last joined together in Capricorn it signalled the GFC.
Remember, working constructively with the energy requires us to stay grounded, not give in to fear and blame and find constructive ways to move forward. Saturn and Capricorn are always a call to take action – TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SITUATION WE FIND OURSELVES IN, CLAIM OUR AUTHORITY [not give it away] AND DO SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE.
Saturn enters Aquarius
…on March 22 for an initial foray, as it will retrograde back into Capricorn between July 2 and December 17, then remain in Aquarius until March 2023. Saturn is the traditional ruler of Aquarius and was the sole ruler until Uranus was discovered in 1781, hence Saturn is potentially comfortable here, even though the two energies are very different. Saturn symbolizes the forces of ‘the establishment’ and is often more concerned with tradition, conservatism and established authority while Aquarius is often said to be the bohemian of the zodiac and associated with the urge to reform, rebel and initiate social change. This suggests a shift in the collective psyche that may start to question the status quo and demand change, especially later in 2020 and into 2021.
The key point of Saturn’s transit of Aquarius will be when it conjuncts Jupiter at the end of 2020, marking a new Jupiter Saturn cycle.
The Full Moon / Super Moon
…on March 10 falls at 19 Virgo 37 and forms a close opposition to Neptune at 18 Pisces 26 and with Mercury stationing direct on the day of the Full Moon this is a very potent time for reflection and insight.
Key dates / degrees for the current Mercury retrograde cycle:
- Exact dates: retrograde from February 17 to March 10.
- Sensitive degrees 28 Aquarius to 13 Pisces
- Full time of influence: February 2 to March 30.
- Time for insight: around February 26 when the new Mercury cycle began at the Inferior Conjunction of Mercury and the Sun at close to 7 Pisces.
- Time to act on new ideas / beliefs: March 10 to 30.
Remember, Mercury retrograde always provides us with the opportunity to free our thinking from habitual ruts and develop a more conscious set of mental attitudes and beliefs.
Virgo is the perfectionist and worrier of the zodiac so this full moon challenges us to find more gentleness and compassion for ourselves and others [Sun in Pisces conjunct Neptune] It may require letting go destructive [self] criticism and judgements that generate anxiety and alienation [dysfunctional Virgo]. The Virgo Full Moon is also a call to re-balance body, mind and spirit: to see if we are lost in our dreams [Pisces] or lost in the everyday details and ‘busy-ness’ of our life [Virgo]. How can we create more balance between these realms?
The powerful Neptune / Pisces lead to enhanced sensitivity on all levels – physical, emotional and energetic - which can be wonderful for our spiritual practice, inner work and creativity, however this sensitivity can lead to confusion, delusion and anxiety. One way of honoring this energy is to take some time out to attend to our feelings and inner world.
The March, April and May full moons are all Super Moons, a term coined by astrologer Richard Noelle. Super Moons occur when the Full Moon occurs close to the lunar perigee, or the time in its cycle when it is at its closet to the Earth, creating the optical illusion of the Moon being bigger than usual. Super Moons can coincide with extreme weather patterns and phenomena such as earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. Energetically we can expect these full moons to be more emotionally charged than usual due the super moon phenomenon.
Super Moons often coincide with severe storm and unstable Earth energy as the magnetic pull of the Moon on the oceans and earth’s core can trigger floods, earthquakes, tsunami’s, volcanic activity and cyclones. For more information about the 2020 Super Moons I recommend the EarthSky website

The New Moon
… on March 24 falls at close to 4 degrees of Aries and sees the Sun and Moon in close conjunction to Chiron, opening a doorway to the transpersonal realm and calling for us be true to our Self [or Higher Self]. We may feel called to take a stand that could activate fears of rejection, a price we sometimes pay for moving beyond the stereotyped roles and rules of the collective. Chiron’s prominence is a call to individuate and listen to our inner truth, even if our ego finds that uncomfortable.

Celebrating the Autumn Equinox: March 20
March 20 marks the Aries Ingress, better known as the Autumn Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere [Spring Equinox for our friends in the Northern Hemisphere]. At close to 2.50pm [Australian Eastern Daylight Time] the Sun will move into the sign of Aries and will be exactly overhead at the equator. This marks the time when day and night are of equal length and heralds a major turning point; from now on the days will become shorter and darkness will soon prevail. [Reverse for the Northern Hemisphere]
The Autumn Equinox chart contains the potent Capricorn stellium which includes Mars, Jupiter, Pluto and Saturn, all located in the last 8 degrees of Capricorn. This suggests that the challenges symbolized by this energy will linger over the next three months, influencing the collective psyche until the next cardinal ingress which is found in June at the Winter Solstice .

The Autumn Equinox marks the second and final of the two harvest festivals in the Celtic Wheel of the Year. In Ancient Greece this was the time of the Greater Mysteries that were celebrated at Eleusis, 14 miles from Athens.
Esoteric writers say this is a magical time when the magnetic field of the Earth is influenced by the Sun’s position directly overhead the equator. A doorway or portal opens to other realms due to a reduction in the Earth’s magnetic field. This is a powerful time for ritual and meditation that can offer us wisdom, inspiration and guidance. The equinox energy lasts for about 24 hours either side the exact moment.
This is the time to acknowledge with gratitude all the good things in your life that you may tend to take for granted… time to stop and reflect on the abundance that you enjoy on a daily basis. It is also time to reflect on your personal harvest and become conscious of what you have achieved and manifested during this last solar cycle. You may choose to hold a thanksgiving dinner where everyone expresses their gratitude for life’s riches, or you may prefer a more private ritual such as the one below.
[Ring Lucy on 0418 382 924 if you would like to attend a ritual to honour the Equinox in Melbourne.]
A Private Equinox Ritual
When you are ready sit quietly, centre yourself and invoke your Highest Inspiration, then call for the assistance of your guides as you light your harvest candle. Gently come into your heart and allow yourself to remember all the good things in your life – the people, things, works, interests, pets, family, travel – anything and everything that gives you joy. Allow yourself to feel sincere gratitude as your mind floats over the richness and abundance that you often take for granted. Form the intention to be more mindful and appreciative on a daily basis.
Next, reflect on what you have achieved and learned over the last year. Give thanks for both the achievements and lessons of the last year, and then spend some time reflecting on what has not gone the way you had wished. What can you learn from these experiences to take into the new cycle at the coming Winter Solstice? Keep your candle to light whenever you need to remember to be more thankful.
Blessed be!
