December 2021 Newsletter

With Venus stationing retrograde conjunct Pluto and square to Eris this month, the collective energy is prompting serious reflection, especially regards our personal and collective values. I believe Venus always invites us to ‘think’ with our heart, a big challenge at the moment as the Saturn square to Uranus is symbolizing the increasing divisions in society.
Jupiter enters Pisces again at the end of the month and will join Neptune there on and off throughout 2022. I will have more to say about this next month but it is interesting to note that the virus is one again spreading in Europe and we are threatened with a new, apparently super spreading variant. Both Pisces and Neptune are associated with viruses and Jupiter can act as a trigger for Neptune Pisces issues, but fortunately it can also act as a catalyst for breakthroughs. My sense is that even if numbers boom again with the new variant, it won't be a lethal as the Pluto square to Eris slowly moves out of orb.
Note: Venus is currently at Her greatest brilliancy so look to the west just after sunset and you will see Her in Her full glory. More information available from EarthSky [worth subscribing to for the astronomy] click here.
Stay safe and open-hearted

December begins with only Chiron, Uranus and Neptune still retrograde
Note: All the dates below are for Australian Eastern Daylight Time.
1. VENUS RETROGRADE …TIME TO THINK WITH OUR HEART.
Venus will station retrograde on December 19 in preparation for beginning a new Venus cycle when She conjuncts the Sun on January 9 at close to 19 Capricorn
Key dates in the retrograde cycle
Venus is known in popular astrology as the Goddess of Love and Beauty, but She has a much deeper significance as an indicator of our VALUES. Her retrograde cycle always asks us to re-evaluate our lives through the lens of our VALUES, something that seems especially relevant with one of the two key ‘COVID transits’ – Pluto square to Eris - being activated by this retrograde cycle.
My sense is that Venus is asking us to bring ‘heart’ into the current angry and polarized positions that seem to be dominating many of the news headlines. This is beautifully demonstrated through the heart motif that I reprint every Venus retrograde, because I feel it is so often overlooked in the discussion of this phenomenon.
A bit of background about Venus and the Heart Motif…
It is significant that Venus makes Her closest approach to our Mother Earth during Her retrograde phase, inviting us to become more conscious of our values and think with our hearts as well as our heads. We could say that the Divine Feminine / Great Goddess is challenging us all to consciously re-examine our values, and the relationships and all we hold dear from a feminine or soul centered perspective.
The new cycle, which begins in the middle of the retrograde phase on January 9, with the conjunction of Venus conjunct the Sun, evokes an image of the hieros gamos or Sacred Marriage. This is a calling to align our values [Venus and the heart] with our core self [Sun, identity, purpose and ego].
This message is symbolized through the diagram below, which charts just over one synodic cycle of Venus. The loop represents the retrograde phase.

General Info on Venus Retrograde…
The 584 day cycle of Venus charts our likes and dislikes, our attractions and repulsions and most importantly – OUR VALUES.
Venus goes retrograde [appears to move backwards] once every 19 months for about 40 days. At the beginning of this period Venus is the Evening Star, visible in the western sky for a few hours after sunset. She then slowly dips lower in the sky and disappears into the blaze of the Sun to reappear as the Morning Star. A new Venus cycle will begin on January 9 when Venus conjuncts the Sun …and I will discuss the significance of this in my January newsletter.
Whenever a planet goes retrograde it offers us a new perspective. A doorway opens and we have the opportunity to develop a more objective viewpoint. It suggests a time of reflection on the past, and a need to refocus. The house position where this retrograde motion is occurring suggests the area of your life that will need to be reviewed.

Venus is at her closest to Earth at this point, calling us to reflect on whether who and what we find closest to us is a true reflection of our values. We are challenged to develop more objectivity and consciousness about all things Venus rules including our
Sometimes we realize the need to develop a new set of values and attitudes based on current personal beliefs and let go outdated values based on habits and attitudes that come from the collective and our conditioning. This may crystallize around the beginning of the new cycle on January 9 when Venus is at Her closest to Mother Earth and conjunct the Sun.
On a deeper level the retrograde phase and the conjunction with the Sun are calling us all to not only become more objective about and conscious of our tastes, likes, etc., but to also separate from our biological drives and conditioning and become conscious of the values on which we have based our identity [Sun]. This process may relate specifically to the house where Venus is retrograding and the affairs of any planets that Venus will aspect in the natal chart during this time, especially by conjunction.
Traditional astrology says that this is not the time to make a major purchase or begin a new relationship as it may be an over- reaction to old patterns. Personally, I have not found this to be valid but this is a potent time to:
…And most importantly: to reflect on your values, especially regards the affairs of the house where Venus is retrograding. Reflect on whether you are walking your talk here or whether adjustments need to be made.
Sit with any shifts while Venus is still retrograde. The time after Venus moves direct and re-covers the degrees of the zodiac that She has moved backwards over – January 29 to March 2 – is the time to start to move forward and honour the insights of the retrograde phase.
2. Solar Eclipse at 12 Sagittarius 22
The December New Moon on the 4th is a Total Solar Eclipse [Sun Moon conjunction] which falls close to 12 degrees of Sagittarius. It will conjunct Mercury, sextile Saturn, quincunx Uranus and square Neptune. It is worthy of notice that the Solar eclipse last December at 23 Sagittarius was also conjunct Mercy and square to Neptune, suggesting that we are continuing to work these themes, especially in the area of life symbolized by the house in the natal chart where 12 to 23 Sagittarius is located.

- Reflect on your current financial situation.
- Contemplate a change of image
- Reflect on how you can beautify your home or personal environment.
- Step back from your relationships and engage in a process of review. This is a time when you can gain greater clarity here.
- Reflect on self-worth and how you are honouring this in your relationships with both yourself and others.

The eclipse in Sagittarius is putting our beliefs, faith and optimism under the spotlight and invites and perhaps challenges us to expand our world view and let go limited perspectives, as well as restoring reserves of confidence and optimism. Given the current state of the world, this seems very relevant and is worthy of deeper reflection.
The shadow side of Sagittarius can always be activated at an eclipse, especially one conjunct the South Node; so beware of any tendency to excess, arrogance / dogma and inflation as well as overcommitting yourself and getting drawn into arguments. Sag loves to party but the desire to break out after 2 years of lockdown could lead some to burn out!
With the eclipse conjunct Mercury it is a good time to find our voice and speak up, but there is a danger of falling in to the shadow of dogma and inflated rhetoric.
The Sun and Moon square to Neptune in Pisces in the eclipse chart suggests it may be challenging to see what is really going on as there is plenty of potential for anxiety and [self] deception. Neptune always challenges us to surrender to feeling and listen to our intuition. If you can allow yourself not to ‘know’ the answer immediately and reframe anxiety as part of the creative process, then the outcome can be both constructive and illuminating.
Whenever Neptune is activated, I tend to remind you that Neptune is associated with Divine Love. Neptune activations always challenge us to view life from a heart centered perspective, with compassion for ourselves and others. Can you surrender to your heart and allow it to communicate with you during this time? Venus retrograde supports this process.
Some technical information that I print each eclipse…
Solar Eclipses are essentially turbo charged New Moons that signify potent endings and beginnings. Eclipses tend to be neutral energetically, but they often bring to the surface whatever has been buried, hidden, and repressed, especially regards the sign and house where the eclipse falls in the personal horoscope so any personal planet that is found close to the eclipse degree [around 12 Sagittarius], or opposite that point [around 12 Gemini], will be in the spotlight, as will the house that the eclipse falls in. Eclipses can herald a crisis, but they also provide the opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start again.
If your birthday is five days either side of the solar eclipse it could mark the end of a period of difficulty. It may be empowering to set new intentions for your life and create a small ritual to honor this event.

As this transit has come more into focus it is becoming clear that there are several highly significant way this conflict is taking place:
One thing that is so clear in all this is that it is easy to spin this aspect however we want to suit our world view. There are many examples of the shadow of both Uranus and Saturn, however astrology suggests this is a necessary encounter where we need to find a way to bring these opposing principles into some form of meaningful dialogue. Any transit can activate constructive and destructive patterns, usually both.
On a personal level this transit symbolizes an inner conflict between the need to conform and act responsibly with the desire to break out, break free and individuate. Owning this energy could mean taking responsibility for our situation, being willing to make changes to outmoded structures and seeking to become more authentic without falling into the shadow of acting out, running away [Uranus] or blame, judgement and depression [Saturn]. We need to find responsible ways to embrace change, let go our fear of the unknown and be willing to pioneer the creation of new life structures.
The Summer Solstice
At 3am on December 22 [Australian Eastern Daylight Time] the Sun will reach its maximum declination south as it moves into the sign of Capricorn. This marks the Summer Solstice in the southern hemisphere and the Winter Solstice in the northern hemisphere.
This information is a reprint from past newsletters…
The Summer Solstice marks the time of the longest days and shortest nights when the Sun reaches the mid-point of the cycle that began 6 months earlier at the Winter Solstice. The Solstice is a paradox that is well known to those who reach middle age – as soon as the Sun has reached the peak of His power the days begin to shorten, and His power will soon wane even though the hottest days are still to come [Due to a seasonal lag in heating the surface of the Earth].
The Summer Solstice is always a time of review as it mirrors the energy of the Full Moon, both being halfway points in the cycle. Traditionally it was a time of rest and relaxation before the hard work of the autumn harvest.
Christmas is a Winter Solstice celebration and always feels a little strange when celebrated at the height of summer in the Southern Hemisphere. The anniversary of the birth of Christ was placed close to the old pagan Winter Solstice Sabbat that honoured the rebirth of the Sun God from the darkness of winter. It is important to find a way to honour the Spirit of Place here in the Southern Hemisphere by acknowledging the energy of summer.
To honour the Spirit of Place here in Australia you can have a special Solstice meal that includes seasonal produce – summer foods rather than heavy winter dishes we associate with Christmas. I light gold and silver candles to honour the Sun and the Moon. I then offer them my thanks for the abundance that Mother Earth and Father Sun have given me throughout the year and ask for their blessing for the harvest yet to come.
If you would like something more reflective, even as part of your Christmas meal, you can invite everyone to share their hopes for the coming autumn harvest and light a candle in a colour that symbolizes the harvest. You could use one group candle, or each person could have their own candle in a colour that is personally symbolic of the harvest they desire. As the candle[s] burns, see your desires manifesting and reflect on what may need to be done to ensure an abundant harvest.
For those of you who would prefer a more private ritual here is another offering.
Ground and centre yourself then call to your Guides and Angels for their guidance and protection. Light a gold candle to honour the Summer Sun then close your eyes and centre yourself. Imagine that you are travelling in the lunar crescent with the Goddess. She invites you to reflect on what you are seeking to manifest in your life and what want to see grow in the full light and fertility of the Summer Sun. Allow yourself to receive whatever you need to manifest your harvest along with Her blessings. Open to Her wisdom and visualize your desires manifesting in the weeks and months ahead.

This is the major transit for 2021 and the aspect perfects on:
- February 18 at 7 Aquarius to 7 Taurus
- June 15 at 13 Aquarius to 13 Taurus
- December 24 at 11 Aquarius to 11 Taurus
The Saturn Uranus cycle is said to be the basic engine of western industrial society & free enterprise. It speaks of the practical application of science, technology and invention i.e.: - the New Technology and all its gifts and challenges. It also highlights the tension and relationship between:
- Uranus – the desire for freedom - which in its shadow can become freedom at any cost
- Saturn – the need for structure, responsibility, accountability and stability – which in its shadow can manifest at excessive repression and authoritarian control.
Constructive application challenges us to embrace:
- Responsible [Saturn] application of the New Technology [Uranus] in a way that does not create either chaos [Uranus] or stagnation [Saturn].
- Constructive change [Uranus] of Government, bureaucracy, law and order, financial institutions [Saturn] so they can function more efficiently [Saturn] and reflect the current changes [Uranus] in the world situation.
As this transit has come more into focus it is becoming clear that there are several highly significant way this conflict is taking place:
- Climate change and the impact technology is having on our planet and all life forms that inhabit Mother Earth.
- Co-vid issues: Lockdowns, mandates, pro versus anti vax.
- Issues regarding online forums …how much liberty/ freedom versus how much regulation / restriction
- Civil rights[CR1] issues: Black Lives Matter / racism / LGBTQI awareness
