2024 Mercury Retrograde
The planet Mercury symbolizes the rational mind and its communication and thinking functions. The Roman god Mercury is the Messenger God, Trickster and Psycho-pomp [conductor of souls to the underworld after death]. Three times each year Mercury goes retrograde - appears to move backwards- activating the Trickster and Psycho-pomp.
The normally rational and logical functioning of Mercury is temporarily re-focused towards the internal realms making it a powerful time for introspection, meditation and inner work of all descriptions. It is a time to RE FOCUS the awareness, a time for REVIEW, REFLECTION AND REVISION.
The whole retrograde phase is a potent time for reflection and review … a time when we can become aware of habitual beliefs and thought patterns and make the adjustments necessary to align our thinking with the person we are now. This is a great time to meditate, reflect, research, seek answers, sort out your paperwork, return calls and generally attend to all the things you have been too busy to do earlier.
At the beginning of the retrograde phase Mercury will be visible in the evening sky just after sunset but he will disappear for about two weeks when he is lost in the blaze of the Sun ...around what is known as the Inferior Conjunction. He will re-appear in the sky some days after the conjunction with the Sun. In esoteric terms the time when he is invisible is the most intense and powerful part of the retrograde process as this when Mercury assumes his alter ego as Psycho-pomp and Guide to the Underworld. In this role Mercury is associated with the Egyptian scribe Thoth, who has access to the Halls of Record [Akashic records]. It is during this phase that we may have our most powerful insights and shifts, peaking around the time when the new cycle begins at the Inferior Conjunction of Mercury and the Sun.
