This month the mood shifts from the fiery Martian and Leonine energy to a more subdued Virgoan mood, suggesting a potent time to reflect on any eruptions and insights experienced during the August eclipse season and develop a grounded, constructive plan of action.

September begins with Mercury, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto retrograde. All the dates below are for Australian Eastern Time.
After the intense fire energy that came with last month’s solar eclipse in Leo the mood in September is influenced by both Virgo and Saturn, encouraging us to reflect and take responsibility for whatever the eclipses uncovered for us. This may mean working with our shadow as well as grounding ourselves and creating a new life structures that better serve our soul’s evolution.
This Virgo energy builds momentum as the month progresses as the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars all move in and out of Virgo. Both Virgo and Saturn have strong perfectionist tendencies so this is a month where we need to be very honest with ourselves as we take responsibility for our shadow and flaws. We will need to consciously engage a heart centred and compassionate attitude with both ourselves and others as this energy tends to criticism and self-criticism that can lead to harsh judgement and paralysis, the exact opposite of what is needed to assist us to move forward. Shame and guilt can be part of the shadow side of these energies and may addressing as part of this process.
Now for the details…
Mercury direct on September 5
Mercury moved retrograde on August 13 at close to 12 degrees of Virgo and remains retrograde until September 5 when He turns direct at close to 28 degrees of Leo, very close to the solar eclipse degree of 29 Leo, suggesting the eclipse could be a catalyst for major changes that may not become clear until Mercury moves direct. Please be aware that the retrograde phenomenon is active from the time that Mercury entered the loop to the time that it leaves: from around July 25 to September 19. The most chaotic times are when Mercury stations – the few days around August 13 and September 5 when Mercury adjusts to the change of direction.
Summary of the key dates & degrees
This Mercury retrograde cycle in Virgo has focused our attention on the area of our chart where Virgo is found and where we may have a natural tendency to worry, over analyze, criticize and get stuck in the detail but it may also be an area of life where we function efficiently and have good attention to detail. Virgo is well known as the perfectionist of the zodiac so this retrograde cycle asks us to reflect on our perfectionist and self-critical habits and look at how we can function more efficiently without giving in to self-destructive guilt and shame.
Remember, Mercury retrograde always provides us with the opportunity to free our thinking from habitual ruts and develop a more conscious set of mental attitudes and beliefs. Concerns may arise early in the retrograde phase but around the time the new cycle began on August 27 new solutions and insight may have emerged. Sit with your insights until after September 5 when Mercury goes direct. The next few weeks are the time to express your insights and put new plans into action.
September Full Moon
The September Full Moon on September 6 falls at close to 14 Pisces, highlighting the Virgo / Pisces polarity with the Moon in Pisces opposing the Sun in Virgo.
Pisces and Virgo highlight the polarity of body [Virgo] and mind/spirit [Pisces] and call us to find a balance between these realms. The Sun in Virgo calls our attention to the practical, grounded, everyday reality of Virgo with the feeling, intuitive, imaginal and spiritual realms of Pisces. The Moon in Pisces calls us to open our hearts and see the big picture while, the Sun in Virgo challenges us to stay grounded and attend to the details. We could see this as both a call to ground our dreams in the world of form as well as to soften our perfectionist and self-critical sides.
The Full Moon forms a very potent t-square with Neptune conjunct the Moon and Saturn in a wide square to the Sun, Moon and Neptune. The wide square from Saturn emphasizes the analytical and perfectionist side of Virgo while Neptune enhances the sensitivity, compassion and intuition of Pisces. There could be a battle between thinking and feeling which asks us to sit in our centre and not get lost in either extreme.

September New Moon
The September New Moon on September 20 falls at 27 Virgo and continues the September theme of illuminating the area of our chart [and psyche] where Virgo is located… the area of life where we have a need for order and clarity and may have a tendency to perfection. Mercury, Venus and Mars are also transiting Virgo so once again there is a very heavy emphasis on the Virgo archetype is prominent in the Full Moon chart and the Mercury retrograde cycle.
As this is the New Moon which always highlights beginnings, this is a great time to start a self-improvement plan, whether that is a diet, a detox or get fit program… anything that looks at sorting out our bad habits. It could also be an opportune time to attend to your book work and clear any clutter. The strong Virgo energy invites us to engage in spring cleaning on all levels - physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual - and get ourselves organized. The functional expression of Virgo is all about service, attention to detail, efficiency and self-improvement.
This New Moon continues to highlight the shadow side of Virgo which can play out as a tendency to self-criticism and worry that can heighten anxiety and the perfectionist patterns that can paralyze us. Remember that the New Moon is neutral and highlights our patterns for good or ill so we can see them more clearly and decide how we can best respond.
Take some time out to tune in and to connect with your feelings, otherwise they may overwhelm you, and don’t let the Virgo need for ‘busy-ness’ stop you from taking some needed time out.
.
Like the Full Moon, the New Moon is also in a wide square to Saturn as well as a very tight quincunx to Uranus, activating the rebel archetype which could lead to battles - internally and externally - between the critic and the saboteur. If life feels like all work and no play beware of acting out or over-reacting but factor in the need for change and a break from routine.
… AND REMEMBER TO BE GENTLE [AND NON-JUDGEMENTAL] WITH BOTH YOURSELF AND OTHERS!

Jupiter opposite Uranus
This is the third of three exact ‘hits’ and marks the mid-point in the Jupiter Uranus Cycle. The three exact dates of then exact hits are:
1. December 27 2016 at 20 Libra / Aries
2. March 3 2017 at 22 Libra / Aries
3. September 28 2017 at 28 Libra / Aries
The Jupiter Uranus Cycle is a 12 year cycle that is said to be a
key indicator of scientific and technological breakthrough.
Alexander Ruperti tells us that at each conjunction a new
trend towards social, cultural, and technological
transformation begins in the world.
The current cycle began at the conjunction in late Pisces /
early Aries in 2010/11. The key turning
points in this cycle are:
The current opposition is the culmination of the cycle – the full
moon phase – where we are confronted with how we have
adapted to the new cycle and whether we have been willing to
make the necessary changes both personally and collectively to embrace change, especially [but not only] in the area of technology.
Spring Equinox
September 23 marks the Libra Ingress, better known as the Spring Equinox [in the southern hemisphere]. At just a few minutes after 6 a.m. Australian Eastern Standard Time the Sun will move into the sign of Libra and be exactly overhead at the equator.
The two key aspects in the New Moon chart of September 20 are both still active with the Sun quincunx Uranus and square to Saturn. The rebel/ saboteur and pragmatist / critic archetypes are still highly active along with the inner conflict between our need for change and excitement as well as our need to ground ourselves, take responsibility and create meaningful life structures.

The Equinox marks the time when day and night are of equal length and it is the turning point that marks the time when the daylight begins to prevail over the darkness [reverse if you live north of the equator]. From this point forward the days will grow longer as the Sun gains power and strength. It is time to let go the darkness of winter and embrace the fertility of spring. At this time of year it is the Warrior/Amazon energy that we invoke to assist us to move forward into the new cycle.
Esoteric writers say this is a magical time when the magnetic field of the Earth is influenced by the Sun’s position directly overhead the equator. A doorway or portal opens to other realms due to a reduction in the Earth’s magnetic field. This is a powerful time for ritual and meditation that can offer us wisdom, inspiration and guidance. The equinox portal is open for about 24 hours either side the exact moment.
A Private Spring Equinox Ritual
Choose a candle in a color that symbolizes your desire. Begin by having a ritual bath or shower to wash away the darkness of winter and the past year. As you bathe, see and feel the past being released so you can embrace the exciting new energy of Spring. When you are ready sit quietly, centre yourself and invoke your Highest Inspiration then call for the assistance of your Inner Warrior as you light your candle.
Reflect on what you wish to manifest in your life [making sure that you do not influence the free will of any other individual] and record you intentions in your journal or on a special piece of paper. Now sit back and visualize your desire manifesting as you gain strength and power from the Spring Sun. Most importantly FEEL the pleasure and joy that comes from the realization of your desires.
When you have finished give thanks and surrender your desires as the Universe may have other plans [often even better] than you have imagined. Keep your candle to light whenever you need to energize your desires.
