September Overview
The month starts with a solar eclipse and a big line up in Virgo. The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and the North Node are all transiting Virgo, emphasizing the need to attend to details and engage in some serious analysis and self-improvement.
Virgo is a mutable sign - and so are Pisces, Gemini and Sagittarius – and the month starts with 8 of the 11 main planets in mutable signs: Sun, Mercury and Jupiter in Virgo, Moon, Chiron and Neptune in Pluto and Mars and Saturn in Sagittarius. Both the New Moon / Solar Eclipse on September 1 and the Full Moon / Lunar Eclipse just over two weeks later on September 17 form mutable T-squares. Mutable energy is renowned for its flexibility and adaptability but can also be overly adaptable and prone to indecision. It might be sensible to NOT put pressure on yourself to make any binding decisions at this time, especially with Mercury retrograde in Virgo.
The retrograde theme of the last few months continues with Mercury and all the outer planets from Chiron out retrograde, emphasizing the need for reflection and review.
The Solar Eclipse on September 1
The New Moon on September 1 is also an Annular Solar Eclipse in Virgo. Annular Eclipses are similar to Total Eclipses but the Moon is closer to the Earth and does not completely cover the Sun, allowing a halo of fire to form around the outside of the eclipsed Sun.

Solar eclipses occur at certain New Moons when the Sun, Moon and Earth align with the transiting Nodes of the Moon and the Moon eclipses the Sun.
Solar Eclipses are essentially turbo charged New Moons that signify potent endings and beginnings. Eclipses tend to be neutral energetically but they often bring to the surface whatever has been buried, hidden and repressed, especially regards the sign and house where the eclipse falls in the personal horoscope. Any personal planet that is found close to the eclipse degree [around 9 Virgo], or opposite that point [around 9 Pisces], will be in the spotlight, as will the house that the eclipse falls in. Eclipses can herald a crisis, but they also provide the opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start again.

The Virgo New Moon / Solar Eclipse illuminates the area of our chart [and psyche] where Virgo is located… the area of life where we have a need for order and clarity and may have a tendency to perfection. Transiting Jupiter and Mercury are also moving through this sign, placing a heavy emphasis on the Virgo archetype.
This Virgo Eclipse therefore invites us engage in some spring cleaning on all levels - physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual - and get ourselves organized. The functional expression of Virgo is all about service, attention to detail, efficiency and self-improvement. This is therefore a great time to start a self-improvement plan, whether that is a diet, a detox or get fit program… anything that looks at sorting out our bad habits. It could also be an opportune time to attend to your book work and clear any clutter, especially with Mercury retrograde in the same sign. As the eclipse is conjunct the transiting North Node, it may be time to extend yourself in these areas and push a bit beyond your comfort zone.
The eclipse may also highlight the shadow side of Virgo which can play out as a tendency to self-criticism and worry that can heighten anxiety and the perfectionist patterns that can paralyze us. Remember that the eclipse is neutral, it is highlighting our patterns for good or ill so we can see them more clearly and decide how we can best respond.
Take some time out to tune in and to connect with your feelings, otherwise they may overwhelm you, and don’t let the Virgo need for ‘busy-ness’ stop you from taking some needed time out.
The eclipse forms a mutable T-square with Neptune in Pisces and both Saturn and Mars in Sagittarius, highlighting the final square between Neptune and Saturn that takes place on September 10. [see Section 2]
In essence this eclipse highlights the Saturn / Neptune square and its challenge to take responsibility for our dreams. We are being invited to be grounded and practical [Saturn] as well as open our hearts and find a way to listen to our inner wisdom [Neptune]. The challenge is not to get TOO BUSY and let the Inner Critic rule the moment [Saturn and Virgo] or to fall prey to the illusions and fantasies of Neptune.
Mars is conjunct Saturn and square to the Sun, Moon and Neptune, potentially energizing us but also acting as a catalyst for unresolved anger and irritation. Try to be mindful of this and use the energy constructively to facilitate assertion rather than aggression.
All lunations [new moon and full moons including eclipses] have a powerful effect on the earth’s electro-magnetic field that can also affect our personal energy fields. Eclipses intensify this effect and the disruption they produce can create the opportunity to reorganize these fields in a more coherent way. It is possible to see where we are sabotaging or connecting with our soul’s desires and align ourselves with our inner truth.
Meditation and quiet self-reflection allow both the space for the messages from our soul /unconscious to be heard and the stillness needed to align with the creative / re-organizing potential of these celestial events.
If your birthday is five days either side of the solar eclipse it could mark the end of a period of difficulty. It will be very empowering to set new intentions for your life and create a small ritual to honor this event.
The Lunar Eclipse
The Full Moon in on September 17 is an Appulse Lunar Eclipse at 24 Pisces and highlights the Pisces /Virgo polarity.
A lunar eclipse occurs at certain full moons when the Sun, Moon and Earth align in celestial latitude and the Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon. The effect will be visible wherever it is dark and as the eclipse takes place close to 5am Australian Eastern Daylight Time but as it is an appulse or penumbral eclipse it will be seen as partial shadowing of the lunar disk. These eclipses are formed when the Moon enters the penumbra, or partial shadow of the Earth, rather than the full umbra or shadow.
Pisces and Virgo highlight the polarity of body [Virgo] and mind/spirit [Pisces] and call us to find a balance between these realms. The Sun in Virgo calls our attention to the practical, everyday reality of Virgo with the feeling, intuitive, imaginal and spiritual realms of Pisces. The Moon in Pisces calls us to open our hearts and see the big picture while, the Sun in Virgo challenges us to stay grounded and attend to the details. We could see this as both a call to ground our dreams in the world of form as wells the need to ground our spirituality.
The Lunar Eclipse forms also forms a challenging mutable T-square with slightly different players to the Solar Eclipse. The Moon in Pisces is conjunct Chiron and opposite the Sun which is widely conjunct both Mercury and Jupiter. At the apex of this pattern is Mars in Sagittarius.
Jupiter and Mercury conjunct the Sun and opposite the Moon suggest the need to speak our truth, but with Chiron conjunct the Moon this eclipse is a doorway to the transpersonal realm where we are called to individuate and be true to our Self. Sometimes speaking our truth can lead to feelings of alienation, so beware of how you communicate, especially with Mercury retrograde and Mars potentially acting as a trigger for repressed anger.
Chironic forms of healing may well be very powerful at this time. Homeopathy, energy/ vibrational medicine and attending to the wisdom revealed through our dreams can all be especially potent.
This Virgo Eclipse therefore invites us engage in some spring cleaning on all levels - physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual - and get ourselves organized. The functional expression of Virgo is all about service, attention to detail, efficiency and self-improvement. 2. Review: Saturn Square Neptune: 2015 to 2016
[Reprinted from the November and June Newsletters]
The third and final square between Saturn and Neptune falls on September 10 at 10 degrees of mutable signs: Saturn at 10 Sagittarius and Neptune at 10 Pisces.
The Saturn/ Neptune cycle is all about giving form and structure to our dreams and ideals. On a collective level this can be the cycle that charts the birth and death of ideologies and the institutions that give them form.
This Saturn square to Neptune is the waning square in the cycle that began in 1989 when Saturn and Neptune conjuncted [joined together] at 10 and 11° Capricorn. This transit coincided with the destruction of the Berlin Wall, the end of the communist era in the USSR and the dismantling of apartheid in South Africa as well as the birth of the World Wide Web.
The Saturn/ Neptune cycle is a 35 to 36 year cycle the charts the evolution and devolution [Neptune] of all forms of structure [Saturn]. We are now coming towards the end of this cycle and can expect to see a testing of the new forms that were birthed at the conjunction. It can also be a time of CRISIS where structures that have not fulfilled their idealistic promise start to dissolve, especially if they have not been built on solid foundations.
This transit will become exact three times. Here are the exact dates:
The main testing points in this [and any] cycle are the waxing square [1998 to 1999], the opposition [2006 to 2007] and the waning square [2015 to 2016]. This transit is therefore a major turning point that suggests the need to honour the Saturnian principle and re-evaluate and take responsibility for all our personal and collective [Neptunian] dreams and ideals and the structures we have created to give them form [Saturn].
All Saturnian structures are up for review at the moment – especially those that were seeded at the start of this cycle in 1989 - including government, all forms of authority including police and military organization, big business, law and the economy.
Also up for review are all personal forms of structure that include the body, relationships and career.
Saturn/ Neptune hard aspects have often [not always] coincided with times of recession and economic downturn, especially where growth has been inflated and not based on the true worth of an object. This is not a time for financial speculation and fortunes can be lost when the speculative bubble bursts. Certainly this transit suggests the need for political and economic reform, reinforcing the energy of the square between Uranus and Pluto.
PERSONALLY…
Saturn may test your dreams, so beware and be willing to accept the tests and learn the lessons that Saturn brings your way. THIS IS A TIME OF POTENTIAL CRISIS, A FINAL TESTING OF STRUCTURES AND DREAMS TO ALLOW US TO SEE WHAT IS REAL AND WHAT MAY HAVE OUTLIVED ITS USED BY DATE AND NEEDS TO BE SURRENDERED .
Any Saturnian blocks, obstacles and fears that arise need to be accepted, faced and worked with. If you have a tool that helps you to release limiting beliefs and inner blocks then commit to the inner work as well as the outer work. Saturn will reward you.
Naïve dreams and ideals that are based purely on fantasy and not backed up by a willingness to ground them in the real world may disintegrate and cause some grief and sadness. Better to let them go and put your energy into something REAL, or at least something you are willing to try to make real.
Saturn also challenges us to take responsibility for our negative Neptunian patterns that can manifest as addictions, co-dependent patterns and relationships, immune disorders, illusions, fantasies, deception and self-deception. Illusions can be shattered and self-deception revealed at this time, but it is also a very potent time to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for addictive patterns and do the hard work necessary to face demons that have been long denied or accommodated. Good luck!
3. Review of the current Mercury Retrograde Cycle
Mercury moved retrograde on August 30 at close to 29 degrees of Virgo and remains retrograde until September 22 when it turns direct at close to 15 degrees of Virgo. Please be aware that the retrograde phenomenon is activated from the time that Mercury enters the loop to the time that it leaves: from around August 11 to October 7. The most chaotic times are when Mercury stations – the few days around late August / early September and September 22 when Mercury adjusts to the change of direction.
Summary of the key dates & degrees
The whole retrograde phase is a potent time for reflection and
Mercury retrograde in Virgo focuses our attention on the area of our chart where Virgo is found and where we may have a natural tendency to worry, over analyze, criticize and get stuck in the detail; however it may also be an area of life where we function efficiently and have good attention to detail. Virgo is well known as the perfectionist of the zodiac so this retrograde asks us to reflect on our perfectionist and self-critical habits and look at how we can function more efficiently.
Currently Mercury is still visible in the evening sky but he will disappear for about 10 days when he is lost in the blaze of the Sun from around September 10 to re-appear in the sky just before sunrise around September 18. In esoteric terms this is the most intense and powerful part of the retrograde process as this when Mercury assumes his alter ego as Psycho-pomp and Guide to the Underworld. In this role Mercury is associated with the Egyptian scribe Thoth, who has access to the Halls of Record [Akashic records]. It is during this phase that we may have our most powerful insights and shifts, peaking around September 13 when the new cycle begins at the Inferior Conjunction of Mercury and the Sun. Esoteric writers suggest that the retrograde phase of Mercury creates an opening that allows access to the wisdom of our soul and the wisdom of the Cosmos.
Remember, Mercury retrograde always provides us with the opportunity to free our thinking from habitual ruts and develop a more conscious set of mental attitudes and beliefs. Concerns may arise early in the retrograde phase but around the time the new cycle begins on September 13 when new solutions and insight may emerge. Sit with your insights until after September 22 when Mercury goes direct. The next few weeks are the time to express your insights and put new plans into action.
