This month, the Gods and Goddess - through their emissaries, the planets - challenge us to reflect on WHAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR US.
Venus is known in popular astrology as the Goddess of Love and Beauty but She has a much deeper significance as an indicator of our VALUES. Therefore Her prominence though-out October and November asks to re-evaluate our lives through the lens of our VALUES.
This emphasis on Venus and the planets and signs that She rules may lead us to feel some dissatisfaction with our lives if we realize that we have outgrown some of our involvements and they are no longer congruent with our values. There may be new involvements and passions that are calling, that may have been calling us for some time. It is time to think seriously about how we can align our outer reality with our inner self and CORE VALUES.
This newsletter will focus on the following Venus ruled phenomena
New Moon in Libra: October 9
The October New Moon falls close to 16 Libra on October 9 and is in a tight square to Pluto.
Libra is symbolized by the Scales of Justice and each year this New Moon illuminates the area of our chart [and psyche] where we have a need for fairness, partnership, equality and harmony. Social justice comes sharply into focus; we may notice unfairness and inequality and feel called to take a stand on behalf of others or ourselves.
The Libran Scales of Justice also challenge us to see where we have lost our balance in our lives, especially in our relationships. The Libran New Moon is always a powerful time to attend to our partnerships – professional as well as personal – as well as all significant one-on-one relationships.
The square from Pluto adds depth and intensity to our feelings that may result in any long held resentments erupting with all toxicity that is the hallmark of repressed feelings. Better to take some time to tune in and process any resentment and beware the Plutonic shadow of suspicion, revenge and power struggles. The positive expression of this energy is the potential for catharsis and the transformation that can come through facing our fears. Pluto always demands the naked truth and calls us to find the courage to look honestly at our feelings as well as our role in any power game we find ourselves involved in whether it is with others or with our self.
This Plutonic theme is highlighted all month with:

Pluto always demands the naked truth and calls us to find the courage to look honestly at our feelings as well as our role in any power game we find ourselves involved in whether it is with others or with our self.
This Plutonic theme is highlighted all month with:
- The square to the New Moon
- The Sun’s ingress into Scorpio [ruled by Pluto] on October 23
- Venus retrograde in Scorpio
- The Inferior Conjunction of the Sun and Venus at close to 3 Scorpio forming the seed of the new Venus Synodic Cycle.
Full Moon in Taurus: October 25
The October Full Moon falls close to 1 Taurus and is both conjunct Uranus and opposite the Sun/Venus Inferior conjunction that takes place in Scorpio, two days after the Full Moon.
This Full Moon asks us each year to re-evaluate our values and balance our need to create and build something tangible [Taurus] with our need to let go and allow the process of transformation [Scorpio] to take place. It also emphasizes the need to focus on what is mine [Taurus] and what is ours [Scorpio], especially in relationship.
The conjunction with Uranus strikes a discordant note that can emphasize the desire to run away, cut off or act erratically. Used in a constructive way, Uranus challenges us to make changes that allow us to be more authentic and honour the Self in all relationships and involvements.
Uranus, the Great Awakener, symbolizes the urge to change, break free of limitations and express our individuality, so sit with any impulsive plans that emerge around this time to make sure they are an authentic expression of your true self, not just a reaction to your circumstances and environment.

2. Venus Retrograde
Venus moves retrograde on October 6 in preparation for beginning a new Venus cycle when She conjuncts the Sun on October 27 at 3 Scorpio.
Key dates in the retrograde cycle
- Venus retrograde: October 6 to November 16
- Sensitive degrees: around 25 Libra to 11 Scorpio
- Retrograde loop: September 3 to December 18
- Venus disappears as the Evening Star around October 20
- Venus conjunct
- the new Venus Cycle begins on October 27 at close to 3 Scorpio
- Venus reappears as the Morning Star around November 2
The 584 day cycle of Venus charts our likes and dislikes, our attractions and repulsions and most importantly – OUR VALUES.
Venus goes retrograde [appears to move backwards] once every 19 months for about 40 days. At the beginning of this period Venus is the Evening Star, visible in the western sky for a few hours after sunset. She then slowly dips lower in the sky and disappears into the blaze of the Sun to reappear as the Morning Star. A new Venus cycle will begin on October 27 when Venus conjuncts the Sun at 3 Scorpio
Whenever a planet goes retrograde it offers us a new perspective. A doorway opens and we have the opportunity to develop a more objective viewpoint. It suggests a time of reflection on the past, and a need to refocus. The house position where this retrograde motion is occurring suggests the area of your life that will need to be reviewed.
Venus is at her closest to Earth at this point, calling us to reflect on whether who and what we find closest to us is a true reflection of our values. We are challenged to develop more objectivity and consciousness about all things Venus rules including our
- personal values
- relationships
- likes and dislikes
- tastes
- desires
- and self-worth.
Sometimes we realize the need to develop a new set of values and attitudes based on current personal beliefs and let go outdated values based on habits and attitudes that come from the collective and our conditioning. This may crystallize around the beginning of the new cycle on October 27 when Venus is at Her closest to Mother Earth and conjunct the Sun.
On a deeper level the retrograde phase and the conjunction with the Sun on October 27 are calling us all to not only become more objective about and conscious of our tastes, likes, etc., but to also separate from our biological drives and conditioning and become conscious of the values on which we have based our identity [Sun]. This process may relate specifically to the house where Venus is retrograding and the affairs of any planets that Venus will aspect in the natal chart during this time, especially by conjunction.
Traditional astrology says that this is not the time to make a major purchase or begin a new relationship as it may be an over- reaction to old patterns. I have not found this to be valid but this is a potent time to:
- Reflect on your current financial situation.
- Contemplate a change of image
- Reflect on how you can beautify your home or personal environment.
- Step back from your relationships and engage in a process of review. This is a time when you can gain greater clarity here.
- Reflect on self-worth and how you are honoring this in your relationships with both yourself and others.
- And most importantly …reflect on your values, especially regards the affairs of the house where Venus is retrograding. Reflect on whether you are walking your talk here or whether adjustments need to be made.
This new cycle begins at the Inferior Conjunction on October 27 falls at close to 3 degrees of Scorpio, two days after the Full Moon in Taurus with the Full Moon opposite this point. The new 19 month cycle will therefore be highlighting Scorpio themes, especially regards the house where 3 Scorpio is found. Issues that may arise include:
- Trust and safety
- Power and control
- Need for depth and intimacy
- Letting go versus holding on
- Intensity and obsession
If we fall into the shadow side beware that this is usually a reaction to fear. Our soul brings the fear to alert us to the need for greater honesty: Pluto and Scorpio demand that we face the raw, naked truth about ourselves, our lives and our relationships.
- What may you need to own here?
- What fears are controlling you?
- What is calling to be let go and transformed?
- How can you experience greater intimacy with yourself and those close to you?
Sit with any shifts while Venus is still retrograde. The time after Venus moves direct and re-covers the degrees of the zodiac that She has moved backwards over – November 16 to December 18 – is the time to start to move forward and honour the insights of the retrograde phase.
Some useful questions for reflection while Venus is retrograde, especially regards the house where Venus is retrograding.
And more generally speaking…
Venus and the Heart Motif
When Venus makes Her closest approach to Mother Earth during Her retrograde phase She invites us to become more conscious of our values and think with our hearts as well as our heads. The Divine Feminine comes into focus, challenging us all to consciously re-examine our values, and relationships and all we hold dear from a feminine or soul centred perspective. The new cycle begins with the conjunction of Venus conjunct the Sun, an image of the Inner Marriage and the need to align our values [Venus] with our core self [Sun].
This need to connect with our hearts is beautifully illustrated in the diagram below which charts just over one synodic cycle of Venus. The loop represents the retrograde phase.
- What is important to me IN THIS AREA OF MY LIFE?
- What do I value? Does my life reflect this?
- Do my values reflect my reality?
- What resources do I have in this area of my life?
- Do I need to add to my skill base here?
And more generally speaking…
- How do I feel about myself? Is there anything I want to change?
- Am I happy with my relationships? Do I feel valued and respected by the people close to me? What do I need to change? Do I give too much / not enough?
- How can I manage my money better? Do I need advice here?
- Am I paid enough for what I do? Is it time to move on?
- Do I value / honour my body? What gives me pleasure? Is there enough fun and pleasure in my life?

Venus and the Rose
Venus retrogrades 5 times in 8 years, creating the rose pattern, below.
Every 8 years Venus goes retrograde around the same degrees. This retrograde phase will pick up threads from past cycles in 2010, 2002, 1994, 1986, 1978, 1970, 1962, 1954, 1946 etc.? Can you relate current events to these times? If you were born during one of these years then this cycle returns you to the one you were born into and this year may be quite a profound time for you.

Interestingly there are two quite literal manifestations of the calming influence of the Divine Feminine when Venus makes Her closest approach to Earth.
- Astrologer Richard Nolle says there is often a boost to the financial markets around this time as Venus acts as a pacifier.
- An Australian meteorologist discovered that the Earth’s magnetic field actually quietens down when Venus is closest to Earth [i.e. - the geomagnetic storm index tends to be minimized] No-one has been able to explain this phenomenon scientifically so the discovery has been overlooked.
