March 2016 Newsletter
March is the first eclipse season for 2016 and this newsletter focuses on the solar eclipse of March 9 and the lunar eclipse of March 23 as well as revisiting the Jupiter square to Saturn that began last August. The solar eclipse actually forms a T-square pattern with Chiron, Jupiter and Saturn, all in mutable signs. This T-square remains active in the Equinox chart for March 20, suggesting that it will be a major influence in the astrological landscape for the next three months.

The New Moon on March 9 at 12.54pm AEDT is a total Solar Eclipse that falls close to 19 Pisces.
Solar eclipses occur at certain new moons when the Sun, Moon and Earth align so that the Moon eclipses the Sun.

Solar Eclipses are essentially turbo charged New Moons that signify potent endings and beginnings.  Eclipses tend to be neutral energetically but they often bring to the surface whatever has been buried, hidden and repressed, especially regards the sign and house where the eclipse falls in the personal horoscope. Any personal planet that is conjunct [planets around 19 degrees of Pisces] or opposite [around 19 degrees of Virgo] the eclipse point will be in the spotlight.

Eclipses can herald a crisis, but they also provide the opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start again. This eclipse is conjunct the south node which has more a feeling of letting go and releasing. The time before the eclipse will be a powerful time to reflect on what no longer serves your wholeness and perhaps engage in some form of energy work [see Chironic forms of healing below for a few ideas].

This Eclipse in Pisces can have many positive as well as challenging effects including a heightened sensitivity   that can be wonderful for our spiritual practice, inner work and creativity, but much more challenging for getting things done in the ‘real’ world. The shadow side of Pisces may be activated suggesting that the potential for self-delusion and denial is here, as well as the potential for strong intuitive insights. Take some time out to tune in and to connect with your feelings, otherwise they may overwhelm you.

The mutable T-square,  the Solar Eclipse and the Equinox

The eclipse is conjunct Chiron, opposite Jupiter and square to Saturn, forming a T-square configuration …all in mutable signs. Mutable signs are flexible, adaptable, and open to change and often have gifts in the area of communication but can have difficulty committing and following through.  Hence a T-square in mutable signs can pull us in many directions and lead us to lose our focus. It is not the optimal time to make major decisions as we may find our thinking changing. The challenge here is to stay flexible but focused on what is really important; in other words, to remain centered This T-square is also a feature of the Equinox chart on March 20, creating an unsettled and unpredictable mood for the next few months.

Chiron is conjunct the eclipse point and  represents a doorway to the transpersonal realm where we are called to individuate and be true to our self [or Higher Self]. Sometimes we can pay a price for moving beyond the stereotyped roles and rules of the collective. You may feel called to take a stand or you may feel a sense of isolation for standing in your truth. You may need to reflect on how you may have contributed to this isolation and whether there is another way of standing in your truth.

Chironic forms of healing may well be very powerful at this time. Homeopathy, energy/ vibrational medicine and attending to the wisdom revealed through our dreams can all be especially potent.

Saturn’s presence at the apex of the T-square challenges us to take responsibility for our Piscean dreams and perhaps our Piscean tendencies to live in our dreams. This is a strong theme all month as Saturn is slowing down and preparing to station retrograde on March 25 and makes an exact square to Jupiter on March 23. [Read more about this towards the end of the Newsletter].

Jupiter in challenging aspect
[opposite the eclipse and square to Saturn] can add a tendency to act impulsively or to excess. It could heighten any anxiety around this time.

REMEMBER: try to stay open but focused and centered and don’t act or commit until you have all the facts and it feels right.
Picture
The total eclipse path puts Indonesia and East Timor under the spotlight as well as countries to the north and south of Indonesia including Australia, The Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. In traditional astrology eclipses are said to be more powerful in the areas where they fall, but modern astrology takes a different viewpoint… they are potent whenever they activate key points in any horoscope.
Picture
In esoteric traditions both eclipses and the equinoxes are said to create chaos in the Earth’s electro-magnetic field that can be used consciously and creatively to disintegrate old patterns and re-organize at a higher level of consciousness. THIS ECLIPSE IS AN ESPECIALLY POTENT TIME TO MEDITATE AND REFLECT ON PEACE …both internally for all humanity and externally for relationships between groups and nations.

This eclipse fell on the same degree 19 years ago – March 1997 -can you remember what was happening in your life then? Remember, you have 19 years more wisdom and consciousness to draw on now.

All lunation’s [new moon and full moons including eclipses] have a powerful effect on the earth’s electro-magnetic field that can also affect our personal energy fields. Eclipses intensify this effect and the disruption they produce can create the opportunity to reorganize these fields in a more coherent way. It is possible to see where we are sabotaging or connecting with our soul’s desires and align ourselves with our inner truth.

Meditation and quiet self-reflection allow both the space for the messages from our soul /unconscious to be heard and the stillness needed to align with the creative / re-organizing potential of these celestial events.

If your birthday is five days either side of the solar eclipse it could mark the end of a period of difficulty. It will be very empowering to set new intentions for your life and create a small ritual to honor this event.

The Full Moon on March 23rd is an appulse lunar eclipse that falls at 11pm Australian eastern daylight time close to 3 Libra.  A lunar eclipse occurs at certain full moons when the Sun, Moon and earth align in celestial latitude and the Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon. An appulse [or penumbral] lunar eclipse is one where the Moon only enters the penumbra, or partial shadow of the Earth, leading to dimming of the Moon’s light in the areas where it is visible.  This veiling or dimming of the Moon will be visible anywhere where the Moon is visible, in other words wherever it is night time when the eclipse falls.
Picture
The Full Moon / Lunar Eclipse falls on September 28 at 4 Libra – emphasizing the Aries / Libra polarity as the Sun is exactly opposite in the sign of Aries.

Aries symbolizes the masculine Warrior archetype and our need for independence, autonomy and challenge while Libra embodies the feminine Lover archetype and the need for partnership, co-operation and compromise. Aries tends to be goal oriented while Libra tends to be more relationship oriented. This eclipse is a potent time to reflect on how you can achieve more balance in these conflicting domains as well as reflecting on your primary relationships and the inner marriage of the masculine and feminine principles. Ideally we can find ways to express both polarities, whatever our gender or sexual orientation.

The eclipse occurs at 4 degrees 40 minutes of Aries and will highlight any planets around early degrees of cardinal signs. Lunar eclipses emphasize emotions, activating whatever is bubbling in the subconscious. Some questions for reflection:
  • How do you own and express your masculine and feminine energies …the God and Goddess within?
  • How do you balance your need for freedom and independence with your need for partnership?
  • Are you leaning too far to one polarity: too independent or too co-dependent?
  • Has your primary relationship become unbalanced in some way? What can you do about this?

Jupiter squares Saturn on March 23 for the second of 3 transits. [The two other dates: August 2 2015 and May 26 2016.]

This square is the waning square in the Jupiter / Saturn cycle that began during May 2000. The Jupiter/ Saturn cycle is called the social master cycle as it is one of the key astrological indicators of social, cultural and economic shifts. The first ten years of the Jupiter / Saturn Cycle tends to be more Jupiterian and expansionary while the second half n[the current waning energy] is dominated by the contraction of Saturn.

This waning phase of the Jupiter/Saturn cycle that began in 2011 [at the opposition] heralded a time of contraction, review and re-structuring. Saturn has had the upper hand for the last 4 years and continues to do so. He calls us to honour this process by becoming more responsible and grounded.  This is reinforced by the current transit of Jupiter in Virgo.

Saturn will continue testing many of the structures [political, social and economic] that have been created or expanded since May 2000 when this cycle began, and will demand that we re-think our progress and examine them in the harsh light of reality. Structures that are built on firm foundations may need some minor adjustments to adapt to the new Saturnian atmosphere, others major re-structuring while those that have little substance may collapse.

Adding to this Saturnian energy…

Saturn stations retrograde on March 25 at 16 degrees Sagittarius 24, marking the beginning of its annual 4 month retrograde phase cycle. It falls just two days after its exact square to Jupiter, emphasizing the Saturnian call to take responsibility.

Saturn’s annual retrograde phase always indicates the need for a reality check. Saturn is at its closest to Earth when retrograde and its house position can highlight where we need to take more responsibility for our lives and do some ‘housework’. Saturn’s station and retrograde motion invites us to reflect on boundaries, authority and ambition… what they mean for us and how we go about achieving them. As part of this reflection we may encounter our fears and insecurities through the voice of the inner critic … the internalized negative voice of authority. Saturn used constructively is always authoritative while the negative polarity can be authoritarian and controlling. Saturn challenges us to claim our authority in a positive way and not give it away to either those who seek to control us or the negative inner voice that tells us we are inadequate.

The effects of Saturn’s station will be experienced most strongly in the houses where § is transiting and the house with Capricorn on the cusp. Constructively owned, Saturn’s retrograde motion is an opportunity to:
  • Become more grounded, pragmatic & responsible
  • Create new forms and structures
  • Develop a stronger sense of personal authority and mastery.
  • Create clearer boundaries that enable you to function more efficiently.
  • Develop a more conscious relationship with your inner critic.

Celebrating the Autumn Equinox: March 20

March 20 marks the Aries Ingress, better known as the Autumn Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere [Spring Equinox for our friends in the Northern Hemisphere].  At 3.30pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time the Sun will move into the sign of Aries and will be exactly overhead at the equator. This marks the time when day and night are of equal length and heralds a major turning point as from now on the days will become shorter than the nights [reverse for the Northern Hemisphere] and the night and the darkness will soon prevail.
Picture

The Autumn Equinox marks the second and final of the two harvest festivals in the Celtic Wheel of the Year.  In Ancient Greece this was the time of the Greater Mysteries that were celebrated at Eleusis, 14 miles from Athens.

Esoteric writers say this is a magical time when the magnetic field of the Earth is influenced by the Sun’s position directly overhead the equator. A doorway or portal opens to other realms due to a reduction in the Earth’s magnetic field. This is a powerful time for ritual and meditation that can offer us wisdom, inspiration and guidance. The equinox energy lasts for about 24 hours either side the exact moment.

This is the time to acknowledge with gratitude all the good things in your life that you may tend to take for granted… time to stop and reflect on the abundance that you enjoy on a daily basis. It is also time to reflect on your personal harvest and become conscious of what you have achieved and manifested during this last solar cycle. You may choose to hold a thanksgiving dinner where everyone expresses their gratitude for life’s riches, or you may prefer a more private ritual such as the one below.

[Ring Lucy on 0418 382 924 if you would like to attend a ritual to honour the Equinox in Melbourne.]

A Private Equinox Ritual
When you are ready sit quietly, centre yourself and invoke your Highest Inspiration, then call for the assistance of your guides as you light your harvest candle. Gently come into your heart and allow yourself to remember all the good things in your life – the people, things, works, interests, pets, family, travel – anything and everything that gives you joy. Allow yourself to feel sincere gratitude as your mind floats over the richness and abundance that you often take for granted. Form the intention to be more mindful and appreciative on a daily basis.

Next, reflect on what you have achieved and learned over the last year. Give thanks for both the achievements and lessons of the last year, and then spend some time reflecting on what has not gone the way you had wished. What can you learn from these experiences to take into the new cycle at the coming Winter Solstice? Keep your candle to light whenever you need to remember to be more thankful.
 Blessed be!

May the Goddess & God Bless You All
