January 2017 Newsletter
This newsletter is free. To subscribe just send a blank email with the subject SUBSCRIBE from the email address you wish to subscribe from – likewise to UNSUBSCRIBE.
This newsletter focuses on the two lunations for January with emphasis on the Cancer Full Moon on January 12 which forms a very potent Grand Cross aspect pattern. The Aquarian New Moon on January 28 marks Chinese New Year and the Year of the Rooster.

This year has seen 3 of my students have finished the examination process to gain their Practitioner Certificate and there are a few more students that only have one more exam to go. I have printed their names below to acknowledge the huge amount of effort that they have all put in, both in the years of study and the months of intensive effort involved in writing each of the papers.

Well done to everyone!

Blessings

Mercury Retrograde

Mercury completes the retrograde cycle began during December when it leaves the retrograde loop on January 28. The chaos associated with Mercury retrograde may intensify around January 8 when Mercury makes it station and moves direct.

Remember, Mercury retrograde always provides us with the opportunity to free our thinking from habitual ruts and develop a more conscious set of mental attitudes and beliefs. The whole retrograde phase is a potent time for reflection and review … a time when we can become aware of habitual beliefs and thought patterns and make the adjustments necessary to align our thinking with the person we are now. This is a great time to meditate, reflect, research, seek answers, sort out your paperwork, return calls and generally attend to all the things you have been too busy to do earlier.

The latter part of January, when Mercury has settled into its direct motion, is the best time to act on any new insights.

 Key dates & degrees

  • Exact dates: retrograde: December 19 to January 8.
  • Sensitive degrees:  29 Sagittarius to 15 Capricorn
  • Full time of influence: December 2 to January 28
  • Time to act on new ideas / beliefs: January 8 to 28

 Full Moon in Cancer
The January Full Moon falls at 10.34pm [AEDT] on January 12 at 22 Cancer. It creates a tight Grand Cross configuration with the Sun conjunct Pluto in Capricorn opposing the Moon in Cancer and Uranus in Aries and Jupiter in Libra squaring this axis. This is called a Cardinal Grand Cross as it has planets in each of the four cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn.
The full moon is essentially about working with polarized feeling states and seeing how we can find a more centred space where we can be this and that, not just this or that. The cardinal grand cross complicates this as there are four competing energies, rather than the usual two, each wanting expression and often reluctant to compromise. This can create anxiety and keep us running around in circles. Regular readers of this newsletter will know my advice for working with any Grand Cross configuration: try to find time to sit in your centre and observe your current situation from this vantage point rather than being pulled here, there and everywhere. The view from our centre, particularly our heart centre, allows us to see our lives with clarity and compassion, rather than confusion and anxiety.

The Cancer / Capricorn polarity invites us to reflect on the balance between our public and private lives, career and family as well as achievement and nurturing.  Life may have become all work and no play, leading us to feel overburdened with our responsibilities and therefore in danger of sinking into a depressed mood which allows the inner critic to take over. If life feels too hard, try to take some time out around the full moon to reflect on how you can experience more balance in your life, especially quality time with loved ones.

With Uranus square both the Moon and the Sun the need for independence and autonomy will be very strong, so beware the urge to run away or over react: these urges suggests that there is an imbalance that needs to be addressed. Pluto is conjunct the Sun and opposite the full moon, adding an emotional intensity to the mix. Resentments that have been lurking in the sub-conscious may erupt inappropriately if we do not take the time to centre ourselves and take responsibility for how we feel.

Beware that with Jupiter opposing Uranus and squaring the Moon, Sun and Pluto any emotional state with be expanded and could be potentially explosive. With impulsive Uranus and Jupiter in the mix it would be wise to exercise caution and not over react …if possible.

The positive expression of this Full Moon may be facing toxic feelings [Pluto] and making the changes [Uranus] that we feel are necessary to restore balance and harmony, especially around our public and private lives as well as our career and family life. The full moon always illuminates and can provide insight. It is up to us to find time to tune in to our feelings, own them and accept that they are messages from our soul.

Looking at the bigger picture …this Full Moon reactivates the heavy Uranus square to Pluto that has been active for a several years now and could be a catalyst for chaos and disruption. The Uranus Pluto square has been a world changer and a catalyst for major political, economic and social change. Psychologically it  asks to let go fear that keeps us holding onto things / people / habits  [Pluto in Capricorn],  and open to new, perhaps quite different paths / patterns / solutions that give us more freedom and the ability to express our individuality [Uranus in Aries]. Whatever has outlived its usefulness needs to be transformed or destroyed… and the more we are able to let go and open to new solutions, the easier it will be for us personally and collectively. Uranus and Pluto are both transpersonal planets that serve the soul and the higher good. The major change they bring is often uncomfortable and confronting for the ego, but ultimately transformative for the soul.

New Moon in Aquarius
The New Moon on January 28 falls at 8 degrees of Aquarius, marking Chinese New Year and the beginning of the Year of the Rooster. Chinese New Year is traditionally time to honour the ancestors and let go the past year while giving thanks for safe passage to this time of new beginnings. It is also a time to ask for blessings for the year ahead. For those of you who have not set your intentions for the 2017, this New Moon can provide another opportunity to clear your clutter – physically, emotionally and mentally – and reflect on what you need to embrace to move forward in your life.

The New Moon in Aquarius always invites us to reflect on how we relate to the Aquarian archetype. It invites us to take a more detached perspective on our lives and to reflect on friendships, group involvements and community. What does all this mean for you? It may be time to join a group, reach out to your friends or get involved in something that has an altruistic or humanitarian motivation.

Besides the New Moon in Aquarius this lunation contains a stellium - or big line up – in Pisces that is also a feature in the Cancer Full Moon chart earlier in the month. The South Node, Neptune, Chiron, Venus and Mars are all transiting Pisces, adding an idealistic, intuitive, creative and perhaps dreamy energy that may make it difficult to get grounded and achieve things in the ‘real’ world. Pisces always invites us to slow down, smell the roses and connect with our feelings. The danger is getting lost in escapist / addictive patterns, especially around relationships with both Venus and Mars in Pisces.
