The New Moon and the retrograde cycle of Mercury both fall in Sagittarius, emphasizing this theme, but this is complicated with both conjunct Saturn as well as Saturn’s movement into Capricorn.

December begins with Chiron and Uranus retrograde. Mercury joins them on December 3 for its final retrograde cycle for 2017. All the dates below are for Australian Eastern Daylight Time.
The December Full Moon
… on the 4th emphasizes the Gemini / Sagittarius polarity, highlighting issues around communication, speaking our truth, sibling relationships, learning and understanding how the mind works.
This full moon is square to Neptune, suggesting the potential for confusion, especially with Neptune found in a square aspect. It may activate the victim archetype and the addictive patterns we fall into in order to soothe our anxiety but this energy can also be highly creative if we can surrender to our confusion and allow the fog to lift in its own time.
Neptune always challenges us to surrender to feeling and not act until something ‘feels right’: in other words we are challenged to listen to our intuition. If you can allow yourself not to ‘know’ and re-frame any anxiety as part of the creative process then the outcome may be more constructive …eventually.
Neptune is also said to relate to Divine Love. From an evolutionary perspective Neptune transits challenge us to open and hearts and view life from a heart centred perspective .
Can you surrender to your heart and allow it to communicate with you during this time?

December New Moon
… falls in the sign of Sagittarius and is conjunct both Saturn and Venus. With five of the 10 major planets falling in this sign – Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Saturn - this is one of the dominant themes for December.
Sagittarius is a Jupiter ruled fire sign that is in a continual quest to expand its horizons and engage in the search for meaning. It encompasses the archetypes of the student, the teacher, the traveller, the philosopher and the preacher. The Sagittarius New Moon always challenges us to see the big picture and let go limited perspectives. If you know your personal horoscope, this is a potent time to set an intention relating specifically to the affairs of the house where the lunation falls.
The conjunction with Saturn - which symbolizes the Principle of Contraction - adds a contradictory theme and challenges us to ground our words, thoughts and actions in reality and take responsibility for what we say, think and do. Saturn can also activate our inner critics and a harsh perfectionism that can paralyze us. At its most powerful this can be a call to excellence, to do our best but in a realistic way and claim our authority without becoming judgemental and authoritarian.

These dual themes, expansive and big picture energy of Sagittarius and the more grounded, pragmatic energy of Saturn continue throughout the month...
Saturn to Capricorn
Saturn enters Capricorn on December 20 - soon after the New Moon and just before the Solstice - where it will remain until December 2020, except for a few months from March to July 2020 when it moves briefly into Aquarius before returning to complete its transit of Capricorn.
Saturn takes 29 ½ years to orbit the Sun, therefore spends approximately 2 ½ years in each of the 12 signs, however with its retrograde motion it usually takes up to 3 years to leave each sign for the last time.
Saturn is said to be ‘dignified’ in the sign of Capricorn as it is the ruler of that sign. When a planet is dignified it is said to be comfortable as it emphasizes all associations with both the planet and the sign it rules: Saturn and Capricorn. As Saturn is said to represent the Principles of both Realism and Contraction this transit suggests a more serious and conservative mood may prevail; one that values pragmatism, hard work, responsibility and self-discipline. We can add the following Saturn and Capricorn themes to this list: duty, realism, tradition and accountability and the shadow themes of materialism, depression, restrictions and limitation.
Saturn always challenges us to ‘walk our talk’, ground our desires, ‘get real’ and take a pragmatic rather than emotional view of what is going on. Saturn in Capricorn may emphasize the voice of our inner critics and activate a harsh perfectionism that can paralyze. At its most powerful Saturn invites us to demonstrate mastery and claim our authority. Essentially Saturn in Capricorn is time to consolidate and ground our dreams in the ‘real’ world.
The key point of Saturn’s transit of Capricorn will be towards the end of its transit when it conjuncts Pluto in early 2020. 2020 is looking like a very eventful year, astrologically speaking, with a number of significant new cycles beginning including: the Saturn Pluto cycle, the Jupiter Pluto cycle and a new Jupiter Saturn cycle.
Collectively, the transit of Saturn through Capricorn, may stimulate a desire for greater stability [and perhaps conservatism and predictability] that will highlight authority figures, structures and institutions, especially those associated with finance and the economy as well as maintaining law and order.
Mercury moves retrograde
… on December 3 at close to 29 degrees of Sagittarius and remains retrograde until December 23 when He turns direct at close to 13 degrees of Sagittarius. Please be aware that the retrograde phenomenon is activated from the time that Mercury enters the loop to the time that it leaves: from close to November 15 to January 11. The most chaotic times are when Mercury stations – the few days around December 3 and 23 when Mercury adjusts to the change of direction.

Summary of the key dates & degrees
- Exact dates: retrograde from December 3 to 23.
- Sensitive degrees: 13 to 29 degrees of Sagittarius
- Full time of influence: November 15 to January 11
- Time for insight: around December 13 when the new Mercury cycle begins at the Inferior Conjunction of Mercury and the Sun at.
- Time to act on new ideas / beliefs: December 23 to January 11
The whole retrograde phase is a potent time for reflection and review … a time when we can become aware of habitual beliefs and thought patterns and make the adjustments necessary to align our thinking with the person we are now. This is a great time to meditate, reflect, research, seek answers, sort out your paperwork, return calls and generally attend to all the things you have been too busy to do earlier.
Mercury will conjunct Saturn three times during its retrograde loop - November 28, December 6 and January 13 – highlighting the Saturnian archetype and demanding that we take responsibility for our words and thoughts.
Currently Mercury is still visible in the evening sky but he will disappear for about two weeks when he is lost in the blaze of the Sun from around December 9 to re-appear in the sky just before sunrise around December 18 when He falls about 10 degrees behind the Sun. In esoteric terms this is the most intense and powerful part of the retrograde process as this when Mercury assumes his alter ego as Psycho-pomp and Guide to the Underworld. In this role Mercury is associated with the Egyptian scribe Thoth, who has access to the Halls of Record [Akashic records]. It is during this phase that we may have our most powerful insights and shifts, peaking around December 13 when the new cycle begins at the Inferior Conjunction of Mercury and the Sun at close to 21 Sagittarius . Esoteric writers suggest that the retrograde phase of Mercury creates an opening that allows access to the wisdom of our soul and the wisdom of the Cosmos.
Remember, Mercury retrograde always provides us with the opportunity to free our thinking from habitual ruts and develop a more conscious set of mental attitudes and beliefs. Concerns may arise early in the retrograde phase but around the time the new cycle begins on December 13 when new solutions and insight may emerge. Sit with your insights until after December 23 when Mercury goes direct. The next few weeks are the time to express your insights and put new plans into action.
The Summer Solstice
At 3.28am on December 22 [Australian Eastern Daylight Time] the Sun will reach its maximum declination south as it moves into the sign of Capricorn. This marks the Summer Solstice in the southern hemisphere and the Winter Solstice in the northern hemisphere.
The Solstice chart contains the Sun is an exact conjunction to Saturn as well as a square to the Chiron, emphasizing the Saturnian theme that has featured strongly throughout the month and suggesting it may be a feature of the next 3 months.

The Summer Solstice marks the time of the longest days and shortest nights when the Sun reaches the mid-point of the cycle that began 6 months earlier at the Winter Solstice. The Solstice is a paradox that is well known to those who reach middle age – as soon as the Sun has reached the peak of His power the days begin to shorten and His power will soon wane even though the hottest days are still to come [Due to a seasonal lag in heating the surface of the Earth].
The Summer Solstice is always a time of review as it mirrors the energy of the Full Moon, both being half way points in the cycle. Traditionally it was a time of rest and relaxation before the hard work of the autumn harvest.
Christmas is a Winter Solstice celebration and always feels a little strange when celebrated at the height of summer in the Southern Hemisphere. The anniversary of the birth of Christ was placed close to the old pagan Winter Solstice Sabbat that honored the rebirth of the Sun God from the darkness of winter. It is important to find a way to honour the Spirit of Place here in the Southern Hemisphere by acknowledging the energy of summer.
To honour the Spirit of Place here in Australia you can have a special Solstice meal that includes seasonal produce – summer foods rather than heavy winter dishes we associate with Christmas. I light gold and silver candles to honour the Sun and the Moon. I then offer them my thanks for the abundance that Mother Earth and Father Sun have given me throughout the year and ask for their blessing for the harvest yet to come.
If you would like something more reflective, even as part of your Christmas meal, you can invite everyone to share their hopes for the coming autumn harvest and light a candle in a color that symbolizes the harvest. You could use one group candle or each person could have their own candle in a color that is personally symbolic of the harvest they desire. As the candle[s] burns, see your desires manifesting and reflect on what may need to be done to ensure an abundant harvest.
For those of you who would prefer a more private ritual here is another offering.
Ground and centre yourself then call to your Guides and Angels for their guidance and protection. Light a gold candle to honour the Summer Sun then close your eyes and centre yourself. Imagine that you are traveling in the lunar crescent with the Goddess. She invites you to reflect on what you are seeking to manifest in your life and what want to see grow in the full light and fertility of the Summer Sun. Allow yourself to receive whatever you need to manifest your harvest along with Her blessings. Open to Her wisdom and visualize your desires manifesting in the weeks and months ahead.
The December Solstice & the Mayan Long Count
The Capricorn Solstice is currently marking the time each year when the Sun aligns with dark band of sky near the centre of our galaxy [NOT THE ACTUAL GALACTIC CENTRE]. The peak of this cycle was December 21 2012. This event takes place every 26,000 years [approximately] and it is a 36 year process. The end of the Mayan Long Count seems to be dated to coincide with this event, suggesting that the ancient Mayans had a very advanced knowledge of astronomy and mathematics. To the Mayans this area of the sky [the dark band near the centre of our galaxy, the Milky Way] marked the original point of creation and was said to be the pathway to the Gods who dwell in there [in an underworld setting], in a place they called Xibalba. The symbolism of this alignment suggests humanity has access to information directly ‘from the Gods’, but that it involves a symbolic death as well as rebirth.

What Can I Do?
This Solstice [and every Solstice until 2030] is a potent time to open your-self to this energy through meditation or other reflective practices. There are two tasks on two levels of consciousness that are suggested by the imagery.
Personally we can find a way to open our hearts and reflect on our shadow, especially the fears that limit us from moving forward. We need to find a way to embrace this darkness and the fears that reside here, rather than run from them.
Collectively there is a need to create new heart based ways of living and being in the world, including more co-operative social and political structures.
For those of you who are more introverts and not inclined to social action, this is an opportune moment to send love to the planet and visualize a world of peace, harmony and co-operation.
