Venus will disappear from the evening sky around August 9 so make sure you have a look before then. She is low in the western sky and the brightest object to be seen after the Moon. Jupiter is the planet just beneath Her.
Both Jupiter and Saturn figure prominently in ‘the stars’ this month as they form a square aspect that features prominently in all the major charts for this month including the New Moon in Leo, the Inferior Conjunction of Venus and the Full Moon in Virgo.
By the end of the month Neptune starts to come into orb to create a T-square pattern that will be a feature throughout the rest of the year.

Saturn stations direct on August 2 at 28 Scorpio, calling our attention to our need to take responsibility for ourselves and our actions. Saturn always demands that we re-evaluate our lives in the harsh light of reality and act on what we see. The old bogey man - the inner critic - can play out, but instead of giving in to his tirade re-frame the negativity as a message from your soul that something needs to be addressed.
The New Moon in Leo falls on August 15 at 21 Leo, just the day before the inferior conjunction of Venus and the Sun that marks the new Venus Cycle. The Leo New Moon illuminates the area of our chart [and psyche] where Leo is located and may highlight our needs for validation and appreciation and challenge us to explore outlets for self-expression and pleasure.
The Leo New Moon is conjunct Venus and Jupiter, trine to Uranus as well as square to Saturn. This is a very auspicious image and suggests increased optimism and confidence as well as breakthroughs if we can pay our dues to Saturn. Saturn squaring the New Moon can be a bit of a dampener for vibrant Leo – but a timely reminder to stay grounded and be realistic and responsible with our Leonine needs for validation and attention. If we push too hard we may encounter Saturn hitting back. Be prepared to shine, but Saturn cautions us to have humility as well.
Jupiter to Virgo
Jupiter has a twelve year cycle and therefore spends about 12 months in each sign, hence when Jupiter moves into Virgo on August 11 it will remain there until September 9 2016. Jupiter is one of the two planets – the other is Saturn – concerned with our socialization and education. It is concerned with relating to society, specifically the values and beliefs of our culture.
Jupiter also represents the Principle of Expansion and the Search for Meaning. It symbolizes our ability to expand our view of the world, find meaning and manifest our goals. Traditional astrology refers to Jupiter as the Greater Benefic, or Bringer of Good Fortune, which we can understand as our ability to feel confidence and optimism in ourselves and life. The dark side of Jupiter is inflation and excess… Jupiter can be destructive, grandiose and explosive. Jupiter’s transit of Virgo brings all these themes to the sign of Virgo and may feel a bit of a letdown after the more buoyant energy of Jupiter in Leo.
Virgo is the hard worker of the zodiac, perhaps the workaholic … even the perfectionist. Jupiter in Virgo may emphasize these traits and suggests it is time to attend to the details – to ground and consolidate - after the big picture of fiery Leo. It is time for humility and hard work. The theme of service is a strong aspect of the Virgoan archetype, suggesting we reflect on how we can honour this urge and ‘give back’ to our community.
Jupiter squares Saturn on August 3 for the first of 3 transits. [The two other dates are March 23 and May 26 2016.] This square is the waning square in the Jupiter / Saturn cycle that began during May 2000. The Jupiter/ Saturn cycle is called the social master cycle as it is one of the key astrological indicators of social, cultural and economic shifts. The first ten years of the Jupiter / Saturn Cycle tends to be more Jupiterian and expansionary while the second half is dominated by the contraction of Saturn.
The waning phase of the Jupiter/Saturn cycle that began in 2011 [at the opposition] heralds a time for contraction, review and re-structuring. Saturn has had the upper hand for the last 4 years and continues to do so. He calls us to honour this process by becoming more responsible and grounded. This is reinforced by the transit of Jupiter in Virgo.
Saturn will continue testing many of the structures [political, social and economic] that have been created or expanded since May 2000 and will demand that we re-think our progress and examine them in the harsh light of reality. Structures that are built on firm foundations may need some minor adjustments to adapt to the new Saturnian atmosphere, others major re-structuring while those that have little substance may collapse.
The August Full Moon falls on August 30 at 6 Pisces and highlights the Virgo /Pisces polarity. These two signs highlight the polarity of body [Virgo] and spirit [Pisces] and call us to balance our attention to the practical, everyday reality of Virgo with the feeling, intuitive, imaginal and spiritual realms of Pisces. Pisces calls us to open our hearts and see the big picture while Virgo challenges us to stay grounded and attend to the details.
The Full Moon is conjunct Neptune, opposite Jupiter and the Sun and square to Saturn …forming a T-square pattern, reinforcing the Jupiterian and Saturnian themes already outlined but adding a Neptunian influence. Neptune can be both inspired and confused; a channel for higher wisdom or delusional …so beware and be willing to test what you hear and feel [always a good idea].
The Neptunian influence is reinforced as Neptune reaches the climax of its annual retrograde cycle a few days later when it opposes the Sun on September 1. This is when Neptune is at its closest to Earth for 2015. The opposition offers us potential illumination or disintegration. We have the opportunity to review our dreams, ideals, visions, spirituality and may also be confronted with our illusions, delusions, escape patterns / addictions and co-dependency. If the victim archetype emerges through any of these destructive patterns, try to see it as an opportunity to gain greater clarity over what triggers these patterns / responses.
Venus will conjunct the Sun on August 16 at 22 Leo. This is called the Inferior Conjunction of Venus and the Sun as it takes place when Venus is invisible and at Her closest point to the Earth, between the Earth and the Sun. This is the key moment in the Venus Cycle and marks the beginning of a whole new 584 day cycle. The new cycle always takes place when Venus is in the middle of Her retrograde phase and at Her closest to Mother Earth.
This is the time in the cycle when a new set of values can be seeded, specifically related to the house in the personal horoscope where this occurs and also relating to any natal planet that Venus aspects at this time, especially by conjunction.
Venus at her closest to Earth is calling us to reflect on whether who and what we find closest to us is a true reflection of our values. We are challenged to develop more objectivity and consciousness about all things Venus rules, including our personal values, relationships, likes and dislikes, tastes, desires and self-worth.
This is a powerful time for meditation and reflection regarding our values and what is of value to us.
Remember: every 8 years Venus begins a new cycle 2 degrees away from the previous one so reflect back 8 years, 16 years etc. to see if there are any echoes and unfinished business resurfacing from those times.
Key dates in the retrograde cycle
· Venus retrograde: July 25 to September 6
· Sensitive degrees: 14 Leo to 0 Virgo
· Retrograde loop: June 22 to October 9
· Venus disappears as the Evening Star around August 9
· Venus conjunct the Sun / New Venus Cycle begins: August 16
· Venus reappears as the Morning Star around August 22
On a deeper level the retrograde phase and the conjunction with the Sun on August 16 are calling us all to not only become more objective about and conscious of our tastes, likes, etc., but to also separate from our biological drives and conditioning and become conscious of the values on which we have based our identity [Sun]. This process may relate specifically to the house where Venus is retrograding and the affairs of any planets that Venus will aspect in the natal chart during this time, especially by conjunction.
The new cycle of Venus that begins on August 16 occurs at 22 Leo is conjunct the planet Jupiter and trine Uranus, suggesting the potential for
